I have taken this opportunity to note a few common errors with the installation of the most basic fishing components – outriggers and rod holders.

Outriggers are more than expensive flag poles, though the installation of outriggers by some inexperienced trades’ people leaves them to be little use - other than as a flag pole.

Outrigger bases must not be fitted to the side deck walkway they should be mounted to the saloon superstructure and thru-bolted with adequate backing plates. This provides unobstructed crew access to the foredeck, and the backing plates prevent the outriggers from ripping out when trolling heavy baits and big marlin lures.

The top return pulley must be level with the transom when extended for fishing, and the tip should be level with the transom when stowed. The profile of the outrigger must not splay out past the side of the boat as this can cause problems when moored adjacent to other vessels.
I have seen many outrigger installations where the tips are splayed wider than the beam of the boat, are mounted using self tapping screws, or the tips finish a great distance past the line of the transom. If you are paying money to have these accessories installed then it is prudent to have them installed correctly.

Rod holder installation should also be co-ordinated with the installation of outriggers and other fishing accessories. Their location needs to be well thought out to work with the outriggers and style of fishing that is undertaken. The rod holder location should allow line to feed off the rod tip in a straight line to the towed bait or lure, and for drift fishing the placement of rod holders needs to take the drift pattern of boat into account. Every boat is different so rod holder positions need to be located accordingly.
